As local travel experts, we know what travelers are looking for when it comes to finding the perfect accommodations for their next trip. To compile our lists, we scour the internet to find properties with excellent ratings and reviews, desirable amenities, nearby attractions, and that something special that makes a destination worthy of traveling for.
In the lot of barrier islands that dot the Palmetto State’s coastline, Fripp Island is perhaps the least familiar developed island to South Carolinians who aren’t among the island’s few hundred year-round residents or scores of vacation home owners. But it’s not for lack of want or desire that we know little about this island paradise. Just past the state’s most visited state park, Hunting Island, the bridge that leads to Fripp is one that curious visitors often cross – only to discover access through the security gates on Fripp Island requires special permission.
But don't discount Fripp Island as too exclusive for a stay-cation. The Island has much to offer with activities the entire family will enjoy.
To begin with, Fripp Island boasts three miles of pristine beach — and rarely feels overcrowded.
There are no big hotels or expensive resort lodges. If you want to spend any time on Fripp, you'll need to rent a villa or one of the many private homes available for family vacations.
This may sound like a daunting task, but the
Fripp Island Golf and Beach Resort can pair you with exactly what you're seeking price-wise and with the amenities that are important to you and your family.
Those amenities run far and wide, from pools to tennis courts, an activity and nature center, and excursion rentals (bikes, golf carts, mopeds, kayaks, Carolina skiffs, and even pontoon boats).
Golfers love the swift breezes and gorgeous views of the two 18-hole courses on the island.
Bring the clubs and expect a relaxing day either ocean side, or creek side.
Dining out on this secluded island is never an issue. Several restaurants, including the casual Cabana Club (pictured here) offer varied menus. The Cabana Club's burgers, hot dogs, and casual food are perfect for dining poolside. The restaurant is open seasonally from June through August.
Seafood lovers will especially love the recently renovated Bonito Boathouse that's perfect for family dining. The menu features everything from fish tacos to a delightful rendition of the Lowcountry favorite: shrimp and grits. Bonito Boathouse is open seasonally during the summer months.
Other dining options are open year-round, like the Marina Deli (pictured here), and the Ocean Point Grille. Learn more about each of the nine eateries on Fripp Island from this link .
Guests at the Fripp Island Resort will also discover plenty of opportunities to gawk at wildlife. Spend the morning, afternoon, or evening watching dolphins in the creek and just offshore in the Atlantic. Plus, more than 175 species of birds are commonly spotted on this island paradise.
Nature lovers also enjoy the Audubon Trail. Fripp Island's 3,000 acres of wildlife sanctuary make the perfect classroom for reconnecting with nature among the lush, green foliage of a well-maintained path.
South Carolina's most exclusive island resort is actually very down to earth and worth checking out whenever you want to escape the crowds at other island destinations.
