South Carolina has been home for AnneMarie since 2001. Her favorite part of the state is Lake Jocassee. An App State alumna, it's always the mountains; the lake bonus makes it heavenly. When not writing about the state, she may be spending time with family, relaxing by the pool, or out somewhere enjoying nature.
It is quite a task to select any most epic-in-the-state dish in a region that boasts the food capital of the South, Charleston! So many options to choose from, what could it possibly be? Yet, here we are, presenting to you what very possibly is the most epic dessert in South Carolina.
Let’s not jump right to the dessert, though. We’ve got to establish all-important context first.
Peninsula Grill, a Four-Diamond, Four-Star Restaurant and multiple-year winner of the prestigious Wine Spectator Best Of Award, is located in the heart of Charleston’s Historic District.
Charleston ranks consistently as one of America’s favorite cities, sometimes landing the Number 1 spot. And Peninsula Grill is a favorite within the area’s food culture, which was richly enhanced during the years acclaimed Johnson and Wales University maintained a campus in Charleston.

The atmosphere is elegant yet comfortable, with enough space between tables so that you don’t feel cramped. Expected attire is “casual elegance,” with jackets requested to be worn by gentlemen.
The Peninsula Grill Courtyard for outdoor dining was designed by Sheila Wertimer, a landscape architect who created some of Charleston's most exquisite gardens. Retreat to this beautiful space for a romantic dinner or a special celebration.
And now for the dessert so legendary, it's been trademarked and is world-famous. Created by Chef Robert Carter, how fitting is it that the now beloved Ultimate Coconut Cake®, 12 layers of delicious goodness, debuted on Valentine’s Day of 1997?
Since then, it has turned heads and captured interest, again and again, such that even a “Throwdown! with Bobby Flay” was held during the first episode of Season 5 of the show.
The New York Times says it’s "a little slice of heaven." Turner South has dubbed it the "best Dessert Cake in the South." It’s been featured on "Good Morning America" and the "TODAY Show."

Although the Ultimate Coconut Cake® is the signature dish on the menu, as a Traveler’s Choice 2021 Best of the Best, Peninsula Grill has so much more to offer guests. From chicken to rack of lamb to lobster selections, you really can’t go wrong if you want a full meal.
If you’re too full to eat another bite afterward, you can get the cake to go. Peninsula Grill also will ship one to you if you ever decide you want one for a special occasion or just because.
One thing is for sure, you’ll leave with a new memory and a sense of satisfaction, having had the opportunity to try this iconic dessert. If you’re staying in Charleston overnight, check out its accommodations included in our list of 16 Unique Places To Stay In South Carolina.
