South Carolina’s longest and largest river fully contained within the borders of the state rises from springs underneath the Sandhills region. At 250 miles, it’s also the longest free-flowing blackwater river in the country. After meandering through a big part of the state, the Edisto River flows into the Atlantic at Edisto Beach.
Surprisingly, and in spite of its length, the Edisto River only flows through one major town, the City of Orangeburg. This makes it the state's loneliest, most remote river ever.
One state park in particular provides locals with a summertime escape hatch by way of the cooling waters. Locals are often found floating on rafts and soaking up some summer sun at Givhan's Ferry State Park in Ridgeville.
You can plan your own trip down the river if you're experienced (and brave!) enough. If not, then there are a couple of notable outfitters that will take you on a weekend or overnight adventure.

Paddle your way to a remote campsite where you'll spend the night or weekend roughing it alongside the picturesque Edisto. Multiple campsites are offered at various places alongside the river, and some are big enough to accommodate groups.
Or, if you prefer to have solid walls (and a floor), you can paddle to one of the treehouses found along the river. You'll need to make reservations through Carolina Heritage Outfitters. Guides and equipment are available.
