South Carolina’s 187-mile coastline, although beautiful, has but a few spots that are unspoiled by man. Some, like the boneyard beach at Bulls Island near Awendaw, are only accessible by boat, but there is one that anyone with a car, bike, or even enough foot power, can reach. Its accessibility, combined with the untouched beach, make it the most magnificent remote beach in South Carolina.

If you haven't been to Driftwood Beach (a.k.a. Botany Bay Beach), or haven't been here in a while, it is nothing short of spectacular.

Also deemed a 'boneyard beach,' due to the salt and sun-bleached white hues of the aged driftwood, this little slice of paradise is both easy to access, yet not so easy to get to.

Immediately after Hurricane Matthew ripped up the Carolina coast in 2016, the beach was closed for many, many months. Not only did the storm wipe out the small footbridge found along the path to the beach, it also created quite a few hazardous spots among the driftwood and newly downed trees.

As if the beach itself isn't enough of an adventure, just getting to Driftwood Beach at Botany Bay is an adventure all on its own. You'll drive underneath one of the most photographed tree tunnels in the Lowcountry as you make your way to the parking area.

And if you happen to make the trek at just the right time (usually at some point in June or July) you'll be rewarded with a surprise view of the sunflower fields that spring up each summer!

Once you arrive, you'll park at the far end of the path to the beach and then begin the half-mile walk through a saltwater marsh over to the beach. For an experience like no other... arrive just before sunrise.
