When it comes to the ‘creep factor,’ South Carolina ranks high with plenty haunted places, terrifying legends, and spooky lore. Whether you’ve actually encountered any of it yourself may depend upon your sensitivity to such things. 1. The Screaming Bridge

2. Haunted Fort Fremont
Are you sensitive to the presence of ghosts? Exploring this public park on St. Helena Island that features a Civil-War era fort just may make chills race up your spine. The ghosts of soldiers stationed at
Fort Fremont have been both sensed and seen. The park closes at dark, and that's probably a
good thing!
3. The Disappearing Hitchhiker
Along possibly the loneliest road in the state, a
disappearing hitchhiker is known to flag down cars on rainy or foggy days and ask for a ride. When drivers stop to oblige, the hitchhiker gets in and even carries on short conversation — before vanishing into thin air just before reaching his destination. Some locals believe they know the identity of the disappearing hitchhiker.
4. Agnes of Glasgow
Young Agnes who was from Scotland bravely followed her boyfriend, a British soldier fighting in the Revolutionary War, to America. She searched for him in Charleston and in Camden but, sadly, died suddenly before they could be reunited. She's buried in the Presbyterian Church cemetery near Camden. Some people report seeing Agnes' apparition and assume she's still searching for her long-lost love. Sympathetic visitors leave gifts on her marker.
5. The Gray Man of Pawleys Island
No one knows when the
Gray Man first appeared, but seeing the Gray Man is always a bad omen. He only appears on the beach on Pawleys Island when a hurricane is definitely going to hit the island. If you see him, it's time to pack up and leave.
6. Third-Eye Man
For centuries a tale of secret tunnels underneath Columbia has circulated in the Capital City, especially among the college students in town. And in the tunnel there lives a man who, from the first second you see him, will make you gasp for air and run. He's a local legend known as Third Eye Man because he has three eyes.
7. Boo Hags
Entwined in Gullah culture, boo hags are known to creep into your house when you're sleeping and do unspeakable things to you, like suck the air right out of your lungs. Boo hags will also slip into your body and make you do things, awful things, all night long. Learn more

8. Lizard Man of Scape Ore Swamp
A freakish thing happened near Bishopville in the 1980s and it's safe to say the community hasn't been the same ever since. From cars getting mauled to the young man who first spotted Lizard Man when he stopped to change a tire next to a swamp at approximately 2 a.m., the Lizard Man has been spotted on several occasions over the last few decades. 9. The Lands End Light

Drive down possibly the most haunted street in South Carolina at night and you may get a glimpse of the legendary Lands End Light. The faint illumination is usually spotted nearing the same old Live Oak tree not far from Fort Fremont. But when cars get close enough to possibly get a peek at who is carrying it, the light vanishes. Some people say it's the ghost of a Civil War soldier who lost his head in a fight at Fort Fremont and he's been walking the grounds and road every night since then — looking for his missing head.
