South Carolina has been home for AnneMarie since 2001. Her favorite part of the state is Lake Jocassee. An App State alumna, it's always the mountains; the lake bonus makes it heavenly. When not writing about the state, she may be spending time with family, relaxing by the pool, or out somewhere enjoying nature.
With South Carolina experiencing record growth in recent months, some of you newbies to the state may be under the assumption that you’ll never see snow here. And while it is true that snow is a rare sight around much of the state, some areas do see more of it than others. That’s right. Even if you’ve moved to our coastal region, you still could see snow there on occasion. But don’t pack up and move back just yet! There are plenty of years with none of it at all in those areas during the winter in South Carolina. In contrast, our mountainous upstate receives an average of six to eight inches each year, and one tiny town in particular known as Long Creek comes alive when it snows with magical winter scenes and fun activities!
Long Creek is a tiny South Carolina town of less than 100 people (as of 2020), located in the northwestern corner of the state very close to the Georgia border in Oconee County. Wildwater Chattooga, a top-rated rafting and canopy tours company is located in Long Creek and offers white water rafting on the Chattooga River, zipline canopy tours, and lodging.
The Brown House is the activity check-in center for Wildwater Chattooga.
Lodging options available at Wildwater Chattooga include cabins, yurts, and this adorable birdhouse-style treehouse, a cozy place to stay in the winter with beautiful views of the snow if you happen to be here during a time of snowfall!
Also in Long Creek, you can visit a charming farm, Chattooga Belle Farm. Parts of the farm are closed during the winter season, but not its distillery and hardware store, which carries sleds!
The bistro on the farm hosts an annual Valentine's dinner but is closed otherwise during the winter season. It does offer delicious hot chocolate if you visit during other times of the year or for dinner.
You can even camp on this farm either at one of the RV sites, a primitive camping site, or stay overnight in the lake house, cabin, one of the tiny homes, or the glamping tent.
The Long Creek area is also home to several beautiful waterfalls, which look like a scene out of the movie Frozen during colder periods of time! Just be careful and exercise caution when hiking to experience this beautiful sight, as it obviously will be quite slippery after freezing temperatures and snowy or icy conditions.
