South Carolina has been home for AnneMarie since 2001. Her favorite part of the state is Lake Jocassee. An App State alumna, it's always the mountains; the lake bonus makes it heavenly. When not writing about the state, she may be spending time with family, relaxing by the pool, or out somewhere enjoying nature.
Is your inner cowboy longing for a vacation? What would that look like in our state and is it even possible? Well, we’re glad you asked! Keep reading for all the details on that vacation you can take to this outdoor paradise for your cowboy-cation in South Carolina.
Old 96 District is comprised of five counties in western South Carolina, including Abbeville, Edgefield, Greenwood, Laurens, and McCormick. And our first stop for this cowboy-cation adventure is at a store for some western wear.
Cultured Cowboy is located on Bypass 72 NE in Greenwood and sells cowboy gear, South Carolina’s widest variety of boots, hats, jeans, jackets, and western shirts. You can also get tack, medicines, and other items your horse needs.
You’ll find trailhead access to Long Cane Horse Trail, as well as hiking trails, camping sites, and places for fishing at the Parson’s Mountain Recreation Area just south of Abbeville.
Old 96 District has lots of other options for outdoor recreational activities, including hunting, fishing, and shooting. The Palmetto Shooting Complex is located on Gary Hill Road in Edgefield and offers a sporting clay course and trap and skeet fields.
This one is two stories with full amenities. It’s in a wilderness setting with 300 feet of Lake Strom Thurmond shoreline and has a large wrap-around deck with a view that extends over several miles of lake. There are several outstanding golf courses nearby, fishing within a half-mile of the cabin, and there is a 50-mile-long hiking, biking, and kayaking trail only a few miles away. And for Masters fans, the Masters Golf Tournament in Augusta, GA is only about a 40-minute drive from the cabin.
Lake Strom Thurmond is the largest man-made lake East of the Mississippi.
If you want to dine out, Break on the Lake is a local favorite in Greenwood for steak and seafood, offering relaxing lakeside views, two full bars, and friendly tableside service.
This is the mahi club on the menu, featuring pan-seared mahi with bacon, provolone cheese, lettuce, tomato, and red pepper aioli on a brioche bun. There are many other options as well as a kids’ menu.
