South Carolina has been home for AnneMarie since 2001. Her favorite part of the state is Lake Jocassee. An App State alumna, it's always the mountains; the lake bonus makes it heavenly. When not writing about the state, she may be spending time with family, relaxing by the pool, or out somewhere enjoying nature.
Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis once said, “If we don’t care about our past, we cannot hope for the future… I care desperately about saving old buildings.” And it was in this same spirit that an amazing historic homestead in South Carolina was rescued from the plans for its impending destruction in a controlled burn for firefighter training.
Instead, Dr. Frank Fairey, a Rock Hill surgeon who had a great interest in historical artifacts and the preservation of history, and his wife purchased an option on the house from its owners, the City of Rock Hill, just before the burn was about to begin, moved it to its current location and carefully remodeled it, preserving its architectural character. The property was purchased by the current owner, Dr. Heather Rorison, a dentist from Charlotte, in the summer of 2015. She named it Tipsy Goat Estate.
The farm is now a home for many rescued animals as Dr. Rorison invests in the upkeep of the estate and makes it available to others as an event venue and for their enjoyment.
Believed to have been built in approximately 1820 for Major William Robertson, who lived there along with his family for many years and conducted extensive farming operations on the vast 2,000 acres that surrounded the house at its original location, it’s the oldest habitable home in York County. Its bricks are from the pre-Civil War era, and the back of the house is the original wood.
This private area can be reserved as a bridal suite for an unforgettable first night as newlyweds, complete with a rustic breakfast for two served in the morning in the glass sunroom overlooking Fishing Creek.
A dining table and chairs can be set up with decor fitting for the occasion in a variety of places throughout the property, including by the creek as pictured here.
