This Stunning View Will Make You Feel Like You've Discovered South Carolina's Best Kept Secret
Fred W. Symmes Chapel, a.k.a. Pretty Place, in Cleveland, South Carolina is a little slice of Heaven that anyone can visit while here on Earth. The long-range views coupled with the serene atmosphere of the open-air chapel make this one of the best kept secrets in the Palmetto State.
Built in 1941 with substantial renovations and upgrades as recent at 2012, Pretty Place Chapel has stunning views of mountain vistas and the valleys the span in between. Inscribed on the crossbeam closest to the cross is a line from Psalm 121. It reads, “I lift up my eyes to the hills…” Indeed you do at Pretty Place.
The Chapel was donated in the 1940s by Fred W Symmes to Camp Greenville to provide a place of spiritual reflection for visitors to the camp. Camp Greenville covers 1400 acres that include this mountaintop sanctuary. It’s used as the spiritual center for the camp which is open year round for summer camps, groups and conferences, weddings, memorials and more.
Enjoy these stunning shots others have captured from Pretty Place!
You can visit Pretty Place during daylight hours as long as the chapel isn’t reserved for a camp or private event. It’s highly recommended that you call the camp office ahead of time to make sure the chapel is going to be open/available on your visit.
