There is a grand old hotel in Abbeville that has quite the storied history. It has risen from the dead on at least three occasions, undergone restorations and renovations – and then more restorations – and is now 115 years old. In the midst of it all, what was formerly call the Eureka Hotel has managed to wind up a thriving, historic inn listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

It was built to accommodate the textile industry, whose traveling salesmen pinned Abbeville the halfway point between New York and Miami.

Soon after the hotel opened, it became obvious the salesmen could use some entertainment. So the Abbeville Opera House was built across the street, and the performers would often stay at the hotel.

In the years between the grand opening in 1903 and today, the Belmont has been purchased, converted into a semi-retirement home, and then sold three more times. With each purchase came either renovations or restorations.
