South Carolina has been home for AnneMarie since 2001. Her favorite part of the state is Lake Jocassee. An App State alumna, it's always the mountains; the lake bonus makes it heavenly. When not writing about the state, she may be spending time with family, relaxing by the pool, or out somewhere enjoying nature.
Since 1985, Hannibal’s Kitchen in Charleston has been known for serving some of the best soul food and was even recognized in 2021 in the New York Times’ “The Restaurant List.” Along with the delicious, authentic Gullah Geechee food you can enjoy while in Charleston, you’ll find friendly service, huge portions, and affordable prices. It’s been called the city’s best-kept secret and “like a hug from the universe” by some. All of these accolades make it a stand-out spot in the midst of a food scene where it can be overwhelming trying to decide where to eat from amongst a sea of top-notch restaurants.
This soul food eatery is found at Blake Street just off of East Bay Street in downtown Charleston.
Inside the restaurant is a casual, humble atmosphere where you'll be comfortable and feel right at home. If you're wanting a fancy meal, this is not your spot, but for good down-home soul food done right, you'll be happy at Hannibal's Kitchen. And in fact, it's often recommended to tourists by locals, a sure sign it's a place you want to try.
Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, some breakfast options to consider are shrimp and grits or the Blake Street Breakfast of scrambled eggs, sausage links, grits, and toast.
What Hannibal's Kitchen is best known for is its crab rice with fresh crab meat, giving it the best possible flavor, worth the drive all the way from Atlanta, Georgia for one guest! If you like sweet and cakey cornbread, be sure to order some of that, too.
Finish off your meal with some delicious bread pudding!
