With all the fun attractions here in South Carolina, you may be surprised to learn the busiest general aviation airport in the state has a new park where you can go watch the planes land and take off. And what’s more: the park is filled with aviation-themed equipment, making it more educational for the little ones and more fun for those who are just young at heart. Take a look:
Greenville's Downtown Airport may be the busiest airport in the state, but for children and adults who love everything aviation, an airport can never be too busy to enjoy.
And now thanks to the Greenville Aviation Commission and a whole host of companies and individuals who've made donations, there's a very cool park with a front row seat for all the landings happening at this busy small airport.
It comes complete with themed playground equipment, including its very own air traffic control tower, a 15-foot cross section of a Boeing 737 fuselage, a hangar-themed picnic area you can reserve for parties and...
...its very OWN "pretend" runway. But don't worry, you won't find any planes mistakenly landing on THIS runway. All of the real action is directed to the "real" runway - and you'll be front and center for all the activity.
The park was conceived due to security changes at nearby Greenville Spartanburg Airport, where school children used to be able to go watch planes land, but no longer can. The park is ADA-compliant, has restrooms and is adjacent to the Runway Cafe, where you can refuel while you watch all the action.
Whether you sit inside or out at the Runway Cafe, you'll have a front row seat for all the action. The cafe is open for lunch and dinner but the hours vary so check those out here on their Facebook page, or call them at (864) 991-8488.
Chow down on a hearty burger dressed out any way you like it with a side of crinkle-cut fries, or order from their selection of salads, wraps and sandwiches.
For sure, a visit to Greenville's Downtown Airport Runway Park and Runway Cafe is a unique and fun way to spend the day. They're both located at Airport Rd Ext, Greenville, SC 29607.
Greenville’s GMU Runway Park was made possible in part by donations from the community and the aviation community. Have you been to this amazing little gem in the Upstate yet? We’d love to hear about your experience!
