Bridges are a necessary part of our lives. Some people love them; some just tolerate them. Of course, there are those that don’t think much of them either way. They are just part of an everyday life. However, to me bridges are beautiful pieces of art. The way they come together, their structural design that holds such amazing weight, elevates bridges from simply being necessary ways to get places; it makes them sculptures on a grand scale. Here are 12 amazing bridges that you should cross in South Carolina whether by car or by foot.
This amazing piece of architectural engineering that was built in 2005 to replace two obsolete cantilever truss bridges that connected Mount Pleasant and Charleston.
This is a pedestrian bridge that was built in place of a 6-lane highway bridge. The bridge is suspended over the falls in a way that makes it look like it floats in midair.
This is the last covered bridge that exists in South Carolina. It was built in 1909 and has been restored twice. The bridge has been closed to traffic the last I heard and was added to the National Register of Historic Places July 1, 2009.
8. Paul Gelegotis Bridge aka Stono Bridge, Charleston, SC
This bridge just amazes me (yes, it is childlike amazement.) It is a swing bridge that connects Mount Pleasant and Sullivan's Island. The bridge swings on a central axis and opens for boats that are too tall to pass otherwise. I like to catch it on days that it does this. I just think it's a marvel!
11. Isle of Palms Connector Bridge, Isle of Palms, SC
Poinsett Bridge is the oldest bridge in South Carolina. It was built in 1820 as a part of a road between Columbia to Saluda Mountain. It's a stone bridge that includes a 14-ft gothic arch. I love this bridge. It is terribly romantic in its appearance.
