We happen to think all of Rhode Island is pretty underrated — and if you’ve been sticking close to home this year and exploring your own backyard, you may be inclined to agree. Still, it’s always nice to see national (or even international) recognition, and we can’t help but be reminded of the time Travel + Leisure listed Providence as one of the most underrated cities in the entire world. And while it isn’t a perfect place, there’s so much to love about PVD.

Providence is not only our capital city, but our largest -- about 180,000 people currently call it home.

And since it's home to Brown University and Providence College, it' somehow also maintains the vibe of a small college town.
Technically, Providence is older than the U.S. itself, as it was settled in 1636.

It grew into one of the original 13 colonies, and it was known for being a place of refuge for persecuted religious dissenters.
These days, Providence is still known for its history, as well as its vibrant arts scene and diverse population.

The one practically abandoned West End neighborhood has been transformed into "the city's epicenter of cool" as Travel + Leisure so eloquently put it.
