We use electricity every day and most of us take it for granted. It’s not until a hurricane or tropical storm knocks out our power grid that we realize how heavily we rely on our lights, stoves, water heaters, and the many more plug-in devices that we use daily. Take this wind farm tour by boat and find out more about how Rhode Island is taking big steps to change the way electricity is produced.
Board the Block Island Ferry for this 1-hour tour of America's first commercial offshore wind farm, located right here in the Ocean State.
The MV Islander is a hi-speed ferry with two air conditioned cabins. There is also an upper sun deck and viewing space along the sides of the cabins.
Sit back and relax as the boat heads out to sea. The wind farm is located 3.8 miles off of the coast of Block Island.
Approach the wind farm and you will be amazed at how large the structures are. Standing 600 feet tall, these structures emerge from the ocean floor towering like giants.
Construction of the five-turbine wind farm began in 2015, and was operational by December of 2016.
As you wind your way around by ferry, a local guide will give you the history and inside scoop on this energy producer in the middle of the sea.
The wind farm tour departs on Wednesdays at 3:45 from Old Harbor, Block Island.
Hop aboard and see why this wind farm is so exciting to our future.
