Winter Is Actually The Perfect Time To Visit This Urban Park In Rhode Island
There’s no denying that downtown Providence is beautiful. And there’s really no better place to take in the views than Waterplace Park, a sprawling urban park that spans nearly a mile of waterfront property. But, while most people flock to this park in the summer or fall to take in one of Providence’s top attractions, WaterFire, the area stays peaceful and quiet in the winter. And that’s exactly why winter is the best time to go.

Construction on this beautiful park took years, finally reaching completion in 1994.

Most of Riverwalk is below street level (and automotive traffic).

WaterFire is a sculpture created by Barnaby Evans in 1994 that celebrates the anniversary of First Night Providence. It's now an annual public art phenomenon, with an inclusive symbolism and interpretation meant to inspire and lift the spirits.

Since it's right in the middle of downtown Providence, this park is never deserted. But there's a noticeable difference in the winter.

You can take a nice, leisurely stroll without worrying about crowds, which is especially beneficial in the era of social distancing.

Over time, the water was drained, the land was filled, and by 1898 railroad tracks ran through the area to support the many industries in the city. Businesses eventually waned, but the River Relocation Project of the 1980s and 1990s brought life back to the Providence city center.

You just might fall in love with this city all over again.
