For some home is where they are born or grew up. Sometimes, though, we discover that one special place during our travels that wins our hearts, quickly becoming that one destination we visit over and over. Eventually, if we’re lucky, it becomes our home. For the final years of his life, a Hollywood legend called Rhode Island home, and, upon his passing, Anthony Quinn was buried in Bristol Rhode Island.
Academy Award-winning actor Anthony Quinn is perhaps best known for his long list of films – making appearances in more than 150 of them – but his story began in Chihuahua, Mexico, in 1915 during the Mexican Revolution.
Quinn’s mother was a Mexican-Indian and his father had Irish roots.
When he was just an infant, Quinn’s mother managed to escape with him to Texas, where his father, a soldier, had already fled. Eventually, the family would settle in Los Angeles.
Quinn’s artistic talent became evident early as he sculpted, painted, and immersed himself in different forms of art, including music. He lost his father in a car accident when he was just nine.
Before making his debut as an actor, Quinn had surgery to fix a speech impediment on the advice of world-renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Then, at 21, he appeared in his first play “Clean Beds,” in a role that was meant for John Barrymore.
The actor was also a professional boxer for a brief period, tallying 16 wins before retiring.
Quinn would go on to achieve bona fide star – and legend – status, appearing in more than 150 films. He is perhaps best known for his role in Zorba The Greek. He won two Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actor for 1952’s Viva Zapata and 1956’s Lust for Life.
In the final years of his life, Quinn lived with his family in Bristol. He wrapped up filming of his last film, Avenging Angelo, in May 2001. The film also starred Sylvester Stallone.
