Woefully underrated, Block Island National Wildlife Refuge in New Shoreham, Rhode Island, promises the unique opportunity to view some of more than 70 species of migratory songbirds.

All that stands between you and a one-of-a-kind outdoor adventure is an hourlong (give or take a few minutes) ferry ride from the mainland to New Shoreham on Block Island.

Since it opened in 1973, the Block Island Wildlife Refuge has grown to 134 acres and promises visitors a unique opportunity to view a variety of wildlife, including more than 70 species of migratory songbirds during the fall.

Some of the birds you might see at the Rhode Island wildlife refuge include the Piping Plover, the Black-Crowned Night Heron, and the American Oystercatcher.

Although fall is when you’ll have the opportunity to view the migratory songbirds, you’ll see plenty of other birds in the other three seasons.

Expect to cross paths with countless seagulls, for example. The wildlife refuge is known for housing Rhode Island’s largest gull colony.
