As local travel experts, we know what travelers are looking for when it comes to finding the perfect accommodations for their next trip. To compile our lists, we scour the internet to find properties with excellent ratings and reviews, desirable amenities, nearby attractions, and that something special that makes a destination worthy of traveling for.
Rhode Island is no stranger to unique accommodations — we even have a bed & breakfast on a goat farm. However, when it comes to a one-of-a-kind stay, we can think of anything more charming than the Mill Street Inn in Newport. Not only is it located in the delightful Historic Hill neighborhood, but the building has a history that spans centuries.
The Mill Street Inn is located in the heart of Newport's Historic Hill neighborhood, where it holds a spot on the National Register of Historic Places.
The building's foundation dates back to the early 1800s, when it was a large woodworking shop that supported the gilded age building industry. The building belonged to J.D. Johnston, who built many of Newport's famous mansions.
The original building was destroyed by a fire in 1890, but Johnston rebuilt it using brick.
At the same time, you'll notice all the historic details that remain -- in fact, the renovation project arned an American Institute of Architects Design Award for the sensitive Adaptive Reuse of a historic structure.
And every afternoon, you can snack on baked goods, tea, and other small bites in the dining room. And if you really need to relax, simply spend some time in the onsite spa.
The Mill Street Inn is perfect for a romantic getaway or a staycation with a couple of friends.
