For an epic hiking adventure, jump on the amazing trail that takes you across the state of Rhode Island. The terrain is quite varied making the journey ever so interesting. The North-South Trail isn’t the longest trail in the United States by far, but it’s a great trail that offers you a kaleidoscope view of Rhode Island’s beauty. The North-South Trail runs 78 miles from the Massachusetts border to the Atlantic Ocean. It is one of the few trails where you traverse an entire state on foot in just 3-5 days.
The trail begins on the Rhode Island/Massachusetts border in the Buck Hill State Management Area at 42°00’31.60″N, 71°47’07.96″W. From that point, you will enjoy a very scenic journey by following the blue blazes and signs heading toward your final destination of the beach.
Much of the northern section of the trail passes through woodlands. But at some places, the trail follows back country roads. Experience the quaint farms and fields of wildflowers on these stretches.
Of course every part of the hike should be savored, but one highlight is visiting Stepstone Falls. Feel instantly refreshed by the sight and sound of this cascading natural wonder.
Traverse through many of the wildlife management areas of the western region of the state. You might want to spend a night in the gorgeous Burlingame State Campground under scenic pines by the lake.
