Step on the ferry in Point Judith, Rhode Island and you know you’re in for an exceptional day. Discover Block Island's lesser-known lighthouse on the point. The North Light is a gorgeous granite and iron structure built in 1867. The lighthouse is the fourth built on this site, the original was constructed in 1829.
The light was deactivated in 1973 and after years of neglect, the historic lighthouse was sold to New Shoreham in 1984 for $1. After extensive renovation by the North Light Commission, the lighthouse was lit again in 1989.
The fourth-order Fresnel lens flashes a white light every five seconds reaching a distance of 13 miles out to sea. Visit the small museum on the first floor to learn even more about the history of this guiding light on Sandy Point.
Explore beyond the North Lighthouse to the end of Sandy Point. This is one of the most pristine beaches on the island. During certain times of the year, you may be treated to the cheerful sight of seals frolicking just off the coast.
Walk out to the northernmost end of the point and you'll see waves crossing in a unique tidal pattern. These riptides can be very dangerous for swimmers, so enjoy the views but choose a different beach on the island to take a dip.
Linger for the sunset and you'll be treated to the most spectacular scenery. Bring your camera, this is one trip where you'll have photo ops almost every other minute!
