In 2020, life as we knew it came to a screeching halt. And while we appreciate our fellow Rhode Islanders doing everything possible to keep everyone safe and healthy, there were some time-honored traditions that were pretty devastating to miss. Thankfully, the legendary Newport Jazz Festival is returning to Rhody at the end of July. And while things will look a little bit different this year, we’re ecstatic to be able to enjoy live music together again.

The Newport Jazz Festival is always held at the historic Fort Adams State Park.

This three-day jazz festival is set in the most stunning location, which only adds to its appeal.
It all started in 1954, when socialite Elaine Lorillard founded the festival, which she and her husband, Louis Lorillard, financed for years.

The first festival was held at Newport Casino in the Bellevue Avenue Historic District. The live performances were done outdoors, and a few famous faces, like Billie Holiday, performed there.
The festival continued to expand, eventually relocating to New York City in 1972.

Of course, we all know that didn't work out. The festival returned to Rhody in full force in 1981, and with any luck, it's here to stay.

Of course, the festival won't be quite the same (and that's a good thing).

The festival team is working carefully with local government and health officials to make sure everyone stays safe. Capacity will be limited, and you may be required to undergo some health protocols and screenings.
Despite its reduced crowd size, the festival lineup looks pretty great.
