Most everyone knows the Legend of Sleepy Hollow and its Headless Horseman, but in Rhode Island, we have our own tale of a headless specter. The legend dates back to the early 1800s when those who traveled Indian Corner Road encountered an apparition that made them shudder in fear.
You will find Indian Corner Road in Washington Country leading northeast toward Wickford. Back in the 1800s, this was land filled with overgrown forests and swamps. The road itself was marked with a large rock so travelers could find it in the winter snow. The lonely road was often covered in fog at night from the nearby wetlands and it was on these nights that many reported an encounter with a headless apparition of most terrifying proportions.
King Philips War had many Indian casualties and it is thought that what might lurk on this road is the spirit of an angry native. Rumors claim bodies of Narragansett Indians lost in the war are buried under the rock that marked Indian Corner. Reports of sightings of a headless torso surrounded in blue light on the foggy road were unsettling to all. Appearing near the rock, it would sway back and forth and rise from the ground. Without warning it would catapult into the sky leaving a glowing trail in its wake. Those who were aware of the unnerving tale did their best to avoid the road and the angry spirit after dark.
At one time a man who had not heard the disconcerting stories was walking along the road at night. He spotted an object peeking from under the leaves in a rain ditch and went to investigate. The object was a human skull and even more shocking, the man decided to take it home with him. He placed it on a pole behind his house since his wife refused to allow him to bring the skull inside.
That night a storm descended on the area. The man and his wife heard noises outside their house. As the racket got louder, they realized it had nothing to do with the storm. A look out the window revealed a headless skeleton with its bones knocking against one another as it seemed to be looking for something. The couple sought cover in their bedroom where they hid until morning. Investigating the property the next day for signs of the skeletal creature revealed only one thing... the skull that the man brought home was gone.
Did the skeleton come to reclaim his head? Some have reported seeing the skeleton sitting on the rock at Indian Corner. Is he guarding the graves below? With two stories of headless phantoms circling the road, some still avoid this place at night.
