Rhode Island may be small in size but we are big on outdoor adventure. Whether you want to embark on a simple hike or camp under the stars, you can find an opportunity for all sorts of experiences in the Ocean State. One of the most rewarding places to explore is Hanging Rock. A short trail leads you to the top of this geologic formation that provides seemingly endless views. While it might make you a little weak in the knees, this spectacular overlook is definitely worthy of a little bit of adventure.
You'll Find Hanging Rock at the 325-acre Norman Bird Sanctuary in Middletown. Explore forest, open fields, and rocky ridges but the must-see spot at this reserve is the extraordinary overlook.
Traverse the rocky ridgeline on the Hanging Rock Trail at the southern end of the sanctuary. If you're looking for an easier route, you can choose the parallel Gardner Pond Trail that winds below the ridge and then accesses the overlook by a staircase.
By using either trail, your adventure will take you to the top of Hanging Rock. This perch 70 feet up in the air gives you a bird's eye view of the surrounding landscape even though it can be dizzying at times.
Now that you've reached the tippy top of the world (well, almost), take in the scenery. To the west catch sight of St. George's School off in the distance. The blue waters of Nelson's Pond can be seen to the southwest.
Pivot and gaze at Gardiner Pond to the south and the Sakonnet River arm of the Narragansett Bay to the east. The water views are absolutely spectacular as they stretch into the distance.
Once you check out the super views, there are still more trails to explore! With seven miles of choices, you can stay at the sanctuary for a few hours or all afternoon.
Visit Norman Bird Sanctuary daily from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Enjoy the seven miles of marked hiking trails for a small trail fee. The fee is $7 for adults, $6 for seniors and military, $3 for students with a school id, $3 for youth ages 3-18, and children under 3 are free.
