Hiking is a little more fun when you have some company, and a special Rhode Island farm can pair you with a hiking buddy you won’t soon forget. Simmons Farm Organics is a working farm with a twist – it offers “Goat Hikes” that give participant a chance to explore a historic farm while visiting with a remarkable little hiker. If you’re tired of walking your dog, this is the cure! Here’s what you need to know about Simmons Farm.
Simmons Farm is located in Middleton, Rhode Island. It’s just four miles up the road from the heart of Newport so it’s a perfect excursion for visiting tourists.
The farm has a very long history. The first farmer on the land was John Coggeshall, of Essex, England – he first arrived in Boston before settling on a 400-acre plot that includes the current farm.
The farm was passed on through many generations and today the farm produces traditional and heirloom produce for its Farm Stand, farmer’s markets, wholesale accounts and its Community Supported Agriculture Program
The goats don’t get the winter off, though. The farm offers “goat hikes” that give participants a chance to visit with the goats before strolling this beautiful, historic farm. The goats love the experience as much as the farm’s guests!
If you can’t make a goat hike, look for the farm’s stand at a Newport Farmers Market. See location details and hours on the farm’s website. Once you’ve said your goodbyes to the goats here are some more charming Rhode Island farms that welcome visitors.
