Before Amazon and big box stores took over the nation, neighborhood general stores were a town’s lifeblood. Rhode Island is still home to some great general stores that take us back in time. In fact, one has been here since 1788! 1. Brown & Hopkins Country Store, 1179 Putnam Pike, Chepachet
In business since 1809, Brown & Hopkins is one of America's oldest general stores.
It's packed full of beautiful country wares, beauty products, quilts, candles, and gifts of all kinds.
2. Wilbur's General Store, 50 Commons, Little Compton
Wilbur's has been serving customers in Little Compton for over 100 years. It was established in 1893 and has been the shopping and social hub of the village ever since. It is deceivingly small from the outside. Inside it's a true general store with 8 rooms stocked with all kinds of goods.
Delicious sauces from Stonewall Kitchens, local jams and jellies, meats, and groceries are just the beginning. You'll also find housewares, clothing, and a well-stocked hardware department.
3. Summit General Store, 25 Old Summit Rd, Greene
Calling themselves Rhode Island's only real general store, Summit also serves as Green's official Post Office.
They sell Blue Seal feed, farm supplies, groceries, deli, and even beer making supplies.
4. Hack & Livery General Store & Emporium, 1006 Main St, Hope Valley
Penny candy, pottery, greeting cards, and all kinds of gifts await at this long-standing general store.
They have over 110 types of old-fashioned candy. Let the kids pick their own for some great memories!
5. Gray's General Store, Little Compton
Wearing the crown as the oldest general store in the U.S., Gray's has been in operation since 1788.
After briefly closing in 2013, they are still going strong as a general store and gift shop.
