It can be easy to feel like you might have already seen all of Rhode Island with how tiny the state is, but we tend to think that’s likely not as true as you think. The state is absolutely chock full of delightful small towns just waiting to be explored on a day (or weekend) trip. With all the charm and history that lies in the state, you won’t find yourself repeating adventures easily, and each new town you come across is a new town to fall in love with. One spot that deserves a bit more recognition is Westerly.
Westerly is located in Washington county and boasts a population of a little over 25,000 people. That population almost doubles in the summer though, when tourists flood the city to enjoy all that Westerly has to offer.
Downtown Westerly is the center of the town with the library, YMCA, and lovely Wilcox park. Avondale has unique old style homes to admire. Misquamicut is a very popular beach town with its own bustling nightlife. If you want a quieter environment, Watch Hill might be perfect for you.
The town is known for producing granite in a number of cool shades, and you can observe this interesting building material in much of the diverse architecture in the area.
Probably the biggest draw of Westerly is its many beaches. There are five beaches to discover in the town, Weekapaug Beach, East Beach, Watch Hill Beach, Westerly Town Beach, and Misquamicut State Beach.
There are also three huge salt ponds that help to form the white sand beaches and provide a lovely spot for some relaxation.
Westerly is so appealing because it offers the perfect mix of developed and undeveloped areas. There is truly something to find for every type of person.
Westerly is such a gem to be discovered, and more than worth your time. This small town is something special to residents and visitors alike and you deserve to be a part of that special feeling. Do you think you’ll be making it down there sometime soon?
