Stargazing is such a relaxing activity. There is so much happening right above us that we often don’t think about, and taking the time to breathe deeply and look up at the night sky can be truly therapeutic. One amazing thing about Rhode Island is that it’s a perfect place to stargaze. With lots of open areas and little light pollution outside of the cities, you can just look up and take in the wonders of the universe quite easily, but sometimes you want a closer look!
One great place to get that closer look is at the Frosty Drew Observatory and Science Center in Charlestown. The observatory is located in gorgeous Ninigret park and operates as a nonprofit in the interest of scientific exploration!
There is a massive high powered telescope inside that can be controlled by various devices around the science centers campus and will show you sights in the sky that cannot be caught with the naked eye.
The observatory, as well as the sky theater and science center are open to the public every Friday for stargazing nights throughout the year. Hours change based on sunset and when visitors arrive, but you can always count on these evenings.
With an expert staff who is passionate about all things space, you are sure to learn something while you take in the beautiful sights through the telescope and open roof.
Astronomers are available and will move the telescope to different sights in the sky and give all visitors a chance to take in the starry views.
Even is bad weather, there are presentations from astronomers in the observatories sky theater, so if rain or snow threatens to ruin your plans, never fear, there is still lots to learn at Frosty Drew.
Aside from their open Friday hours, there is also lots of special programming at the observatory
Keep an eye out for events around astrological phenomenon, you may have a chance to see something truly inspiring through the telescope.
