Rhode Island might be small (and wonderfully beautiful), but the countless hiking trails that meander through it? Well, there are so many that we really need to have a bucket list dedicated just to hiking. Otherwise, we might miss the most amazing journey without even realizing it. That’s where this forest hike in Rhode Island comes in. It’s absolutely a must-travel for every Rhode Islander and visitor.
An easy wander through the forest awaits along the 1.6-mile Fort Nature Blue Loop Trail, nestled in Florence Sutherland Fort & Richard Knight Fort Nature Refuge in North Smithfield.
Follow the blue blazes of the loop trail that's fun in all four seasons. Even though it's considered easy, make sure you still wear sturdy shoes and dress for the weather.
Keep your eyes to the sky - and the fields and water - for a variety of birds, too. The nature refuge is known for wild turkey, wood ducks, and barred owls.
Even if it's busy, steal away for a moment of quiet reflection near the water. There's even a bench where you can take a breather or just drink in the beauty surrounding you.
This is one of those easy trails that is perfect for hikers of all ages, including the kiddos. If you're a newbie to hiking, you'll find the Fort Nature Blue Loop is an ideal introduction.
If you're visiting during the winter, follow the picturesque path then go snowshoeing or cross-country skiing. Both are popular ways to explore the expansive nature refuge when there's snow on the ground.
