The Newport Cliff walk covers 3.5 miles of the shoreline in Newport. In 1975, the walk was designated a National Recreation Trail, the first in New England to earn that distinction.
Two-thirds of the walk is very easy to stroll with a paved path while the southern end of the walk is on the natural rocky terrain and more difficult to navigate. If you've never walked the entire length, you'll want to put it on your bucket list.
In some spots, drops of over 70 feet are just a few steps off the path. The stomach dropping sight only adds to the intrigue of the walk that sees over a quarter of a million visits each year.
In sharp contrast, portions of the walk give way to views of the Newport mansions set back from the ocean. These homes of the Gilded Age will leave you awe-struck.
The walk starts at the western end of Easton's or First Beach at Memorial Blvd. and runs south to Bellevue Ave. at the east end of Bailey's Beach locally referred to as Reject's Beach.
One of the many highlights of the Newport Cliff Walk is the Forty Steps. This spot was once a place for servants of the mansions to enjoy. Dancing, socializing, and taking in the views were a welcome break from their everyday duties.
The cliff walk is handicap accessible at the north end which is also the best section for a family outing. To complete the entire 3.5-mile walk, plan for a minimum of 2.5 hours to complete the entire cliffside trail.
