The point of land was named after colonial Governor William Brenton.

When Davis died in 1915, the estate went into the hands of Mr. and Mrs. Milton Budlong of Providence. Unfortunately, the grounds were eventually abandoned and unoccupied. But the state park is now public land, and it's absolutely gorgeous.
