Rhode Island’s amazing history has ensured a few things for the state’s residents. For one, excellent museums and history-related attractions can be found all over the state. 1. Let's begin with the Newport Mansions. We introduce you to the Breakers, a massive gilded age mansion and former Vanderbilt residence.
6. Kingscote: According to the Newport Preservation Society, this beautiful home is considered the landmark of the Gothic Revival style in American architecture.
8. Hunter House: This lesser-known property is also owned by the Newport Preservation Society and is a powerful example of Georgian Colonial style architecture.
9. The Colony House, Newport: As one of the oldest original state houses in the country, the Colony House was built in the 1730s. The building can be toured through the Newport Historical Society.
10. Moving away from Newport, we have the current Rhode Island State House in Providence. Built in 1895, the state house offers one of the largest unsupported marble domes in the entire world.
13. Providence Atheneum, Providence: This 1800s building is magnificent. Apparently Edgar Allen Poe felt this way, too. He frequented this subscription library during his stint in Providence in the 1840s.
14. Southeast Light, Block Island: This lighthouse was named a national historic landmark as one of the most architecturally stunning lighthouses built in the country during the 1900s.
