Just about an hour from downtown Pittsburgh, the tiny rural community of Farmington offers quite a contrast to the fast pace of the big city, promising tranquility along winding roads, quaint restaurants, and plenty of wide open spaces.
If you visit between April and October, go underground on a one-of-a-kind adventure at Laurel Caverns, the largest cave in Pennsylvania. Join a guided tour that will take you through some of the four miles of passageways.
After you’ve come back above ground, stop by the Family Lookout to check out the absolutely breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. Mine for gemstones, too.
Channel your inner history buff with a visit to Fort Necessity National Battlefield. Or, if you’re seeking some peace and quiet, venture over to the Woodlands Spa and Salon for a day of pampering.
Farmington also provides an ideal launching point for adventure. The tiny rural community is just under seven miles from the snug town of Ohiopyle, where you can explore Ohiopyle State Park on one of its many hiking and biking trails.
Even if you’re not up for a hike, you can see two of the most well-known waterfalls in Pennsylvania – Cucumber Falls and Ohiopyle Falls – both at the end of short paths.
