Primanti Brothers in Pittsburgh got off to a modest start, serving its now-famous sandwiches to hungry truckers from a food cart in 1933.
Back in those early days, Joe Primanti, the founder of the iconic Pennsylvania restaurant, added a helping of fries to his sandwiches. That way, he reasoned, truckers would have a full meal that they could eat with one hand while steering with the other.
The concept took off, becoming something of a cultural phenomenon, and before long, coleslaw was added to the mix. Today, only one place comes to mind when you think of fries and coleslaw on sandwiches.
From a single food cart, Primanti Brothers has grown to include locations throughout Pennsylvania and into several other states, including West Virginia and Maryland.
Now that you know you can get a Primanti Brothers’ sandwich no matter where in the U.S. you live, you face the daunting task of deciding which to order. Try one of the originals of the Almost Famous Sandwiches.
Each comes on fresh Italian white bread and includes those famous fresh-cut fries and coleslaw. Choose from the classic or the Big Bro sizes in spicy Italian ham, angus sirloin steak and cheese, or corned beef and cheese.
Or, order what might be the most famous – or almost famous – sandwich, The Pittsburger, a steak patty topped with cheese, tomatoes, lettuce, fries, and coleslaw.
