Each of Pennsylvania’s small towns has that one characteristic for which it is known. Bloomsburg, for example, is known as Pennsylvania’s only official town, while Mars’ most recognizable landmark is a flyer saucer. Then there’s Coudersport, a remote little town in Pennsylvania that’s known for its dark skies.
A tiny town with just over 2,300 residents, Coudersport sits along the Allegheny River, in what has been called one of the most remote areas of Pennsylvania.
The darling small town is known for a few natural wonders, including Coudersport Ice Mine. The seasonal attraction draws visitors who want to witness ice as it freezes in the summer. It later thaws in the winter.
If you plan to visit, spend your day exploring the darling downtown area, home to a Main Street that looks like it’s leaped from the front of an old-fashioned postcard.
Once the sun sets, you’ll be treated to a nighttime show in the sky. Cherry Springs State Park is known for its dark skies, drawing casual stargazers and serious astronomers. The stargazing areas are perched atop a 2,300-foot mountain.
Have you been to this remote little town in Pennsylvania? Did you visit Cherry Springs State Park? What did you think? Let us know in the comments! For more stargazing, plan a visit to this state park in Pennsylvania.
