Now that the sweltering heat and humidity of summer’s finally behind us, we can spend more comfortable days outdoors. Autumn in the Burgh means plenty to do and to see – whether you’re in the mood to pick pumpkins at a local pumpkin patch or you want to spend a day at a fall festival. Of course, hiking and autumn, with its crisp air, go hand-in-hand. And, if you’re looking for a relaxing way to spend a fall day, embark on this heritage trail near Pittsburgh.
Pack plenty of water and snacks for your journey along the Westmoreland Heritage Trail, less than 30 miles from downtown Pittsburgh.
However, future expansion of the trail will connect the two sections, allowing visitors to hike 22 miles from Saltsburg to Trafford. In Trafford, the Westmoreland Heritage Trail will connect to the Great Allegheny Passage.
But, until then, you'll have to decide with which section to start and how you want to explore it. Walking, jogging, and biking are all options along the predominately flat trail that's also handicap accessible.
Of course, the trail - which winds along railroad tracks and by the river - has a few rules. The trail is open daily from dawn to dusk, and all users are expected to remain on the trail to avoid trespassing on private property.
Bring your pooch along, as long as he remains on a leash (and you pick up after him) on the trail, which prohibits motorized vehicles. Wheelchairs are permitted.
The Westmoreland Heritage Trail near Pittsburgh offers a charming way to spend a crisp, fall day. Or, if you prefer to spend time closer to downtown, head out on the Three Rivers Heritage Trail. Click here to read more.
