Pittsburghers are pretty fortunate to be within reasonable driving distance of several gorgeous state parks. Like Raccoon Creek State Park. This sprawling park near Pittsburgh provides the perfect setting for a day outdoors — any time of the year — in the fresh air. But, for a particularly unique and breathtaking experience, plan a visit during the wintertime.
A half an hour's drive from downtown Pittsburgh, Raccoon Creek State Park is a favorite summer destination for Pittsburghers. But, have you been there when it's transformed into a winter wonderland?
Glide across Raccoon Lake on ice skates on those cold winter days. The state, however, does not keep track of the thickness of the ice. Be sure that it is sturdy enough to hold your weight and the weight of those with you.
Embark on the Pinto Trail, a 1.1-mile trail that's popular with both hikers and cross-country skiers. Rated as easy, the trail will lead you through picturesque meadows and forest areas.
Keep an eye out for the local wildlife that call Raccoon Creek State Park home. Deer, raccoon, fox, opossums, and skunk all live within the natural wonder.
Snowmobiling's another popular activity when conditions allow. If you're up for an afternoon of snowmobiling, you'll only be able to use four miles of Pioneer Camp Road and Nichols Road.
This park near Pittsburgh — Raccoon Creek State Park — is certainly gorgeous all year around but the snow and ice of winter make it even more breathtaking. Moraine State Park also turns into a winter wonderland each year.
