Today, let’s take a look at the safest places to live in Pittsburgh as identified by Niche, a Pittsburgh company that ranks neighborhoods, K-12 schools, and colleges based on crime rates, housing prices, and employment rates.
Niche found that annual violent crimes (per every 100,000) in the Pittsburgh Metro area include an average of 196 assaults, 4.8 murders, and 96.4 robberies. The crime statistics cited by Niche are from the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting (2014). Here are the top 10 safest places to live in Pittsburgh.
Regent Square tops the list of the safest places to live in Pittsburgh in 2016. With 4,198 residents, Regent Square tallied no violent crimes - murder, assault, or robbery. The average rent ($821 a month) in Regent Square is lower than the national average of $902 and home price averages ($178,809) are slightly higher than the national average of $176,700.
Squirrel Hill North, which includes the vibrant Murray Avenue, lands second on Niche's list. The neighborhood of 12,414 , has an average home price of $413,559 and an average monthly rent of $1,116. Squirrel Hill North saw 80.6 assaults and 32.2 robberies with no murders in 2014.
Approximately 10,673 people call the Point Breeze neighborhood home. Residents who rent pay an average of $1,001 a month and home values average $307,754. Latest statistics show the neighborhood experienced 65.6 assaults and 75 robberies.
A fairly small neighborhood with a population of only 3,846, Friendship's residents who rent pay a monthly average of $798 while home values average $145,162. The neighborhood saw no murders or robberies but annually totaled 156 assaults in 2014.
With only 1,286 residents, Swisshelm Park comes in at the fifth safest place to live in Pittsburgh. The neighborhood, which has an average monthly rental rate of $917 and an average home value of $119,600, had no violent crime in the latest crime data available.
Approximately 3,547 people call Point Breeze North home, with the neighborhood experiencing 169.2 assaults and 169.2 robberies. Residents who rent pay an average of $768 a month and home values average $184,150.
South Oakland, home of Magee Women's Hospital, has a population of 3,894. Crimes rates stand at 231.1 assaults, 77 murders, and 179.8 robberies. Rentals average $944 a month with average home values at $88,028.
The quaint neighborhood of Shadyside, with 17,131 residents, ranks as the eighth safest place in Pittsburgh to live. Shadyside experienced no murders, 239.3 assaults, and 181 robberies. Rental properties average $1,030 a month with median home values of $295,419.
Polish Hill is home to 1,453 residents and a relatively low violent crime rate. The neighborhood had no murders or assaults and 68.8 robberies in 2014. Renters pay an average monthly rent of $689 while the media home value is $101,789.
Squirrel Hill South rounds out the top 10 safest places to live in Pittsburgh. An estimated 19,212 live in the neighborhood which had 20.8 assaults and 52.1 robberies. Home values average $303,758 and monthly rent averages $995.
