Summer’s all about fun. We certainly have no shortage of fun things to do or adventurous places to go in Pittsburgh and the surrounding area. Now’s a pretty good time to start making a list of those places and of the things you want to do this summer. Be sure to add this rural town near Pittsburgh that boasts something for everyone – from a natural water slide to cascading waterfalls.
Adventure beckons visitors to Ohiopyle, a tiny town of less than 60 residents, all year around, but it doesn't get any better than a summertime visit.
Undoubtedly, the crown jewel of the town just under an hour and a half from downtown Pittsburgh is the massive Ohiopyle State Park, which spans over 19,000 acres.
There, you can slide down a natural water slide, visit waterfalls including Cucumber Falls and Ohiopyle Falls, and explore some of the 79 miles of hiking trails.
Since you're right on the Youghiogheny River, you might also want to spend time in the water - kayaking, canoeing, or whitewater rafting. Laurel Highlands River Tours & Outdoor Center is one of the companies that provides everything you need to get started.
If you're up for some thrills in the air instead of in the water, check out the Ziplining Adventure Park, where you can soar through the trees and take on a ropes course.
Bring along a picnic and snacks, in case you get hungry, or check out one of the area restaurants. Ohiopyle Bakery and Sandwich Shoppe, for example, serves a delicious assortment of...
Freshly-made sandwiches, salads, and soups. Don't forget to check out the dessert menu, too, which boasts apple dumplings, brownies, and lady locks (made to order).
End your day with a delicious meal, or head back to Ohiopyle State Park for a night or two of camping. Pitch a tent or rent a cabin at Kentuck Campground.
