Pittsburgh’s an original. Most people – well, at least Pittsburghers – would wholeheartedly agree with that sentiment, right? One of the things that sets the Burgh apart from other cities is, obviously, the food. Pittsburgh’s invented some pretty delicious dishes and treats. Some of those foods you might find elsewhere, but nobody does it better than the original. Here are eight one-of-a-kind foods in Pittsburgh.
Chipped chopped ham is definitely a Burgh thing. In fact, it’s a culinary tradition, courtesy of Isaly’s. Who among us hasn’t had a chipped chopped ham sandwich for lunch or dinner?
Others may try to replicate Eat ‘N Parks’ smiley cookie. But, let’s face it, no one can. The smiley cookie is uniquely Pittsburgh. That delectable cookie is certainly the perfect way to end a meal and is just as memorable as a snack.
We, Pittsburghers, sure do know how to do things right. And, that includes adding our fries to our salads. Yep. Nothing quite compares to fries as a topping, wouldn’t you agree?
Generations of hungry Pittsburghers have made Primanti Brothers’ sandwiches a hearty meal. After all, they’re topped with meat, cheese, coleslaw, and, of course, fries.
Summer means two things in Pittsburgh: The start of construction season and Potato Patch fries. Order them drenched in cheese and topped with bacon. Or, just dip them into ketchup or mustard. Any way you eat ‘em, Potato Patch fries are a delicious Pittsburgh original.
Sure, you can find burnt almond torte in other cities. But, no one does it better than the original: Prantl’s Bakery. Get your burnt almond torte at the bakery itself, or order it online. Burnt almond torte is the perfect treat for any celebration – birthdays, weddings, Super Bowl parties and…the list goes on.
Kick off your meal with a hearty helping of fried zucchini. Or, even eat it as the main entrée. Whatever you do, you know you’re in for a delicious dish that’s unique to the Burgh.
Sarris Candies is pretty much synonymous with Pittsburgh, wouldn’t you say? And, nothing quite compares to a trip to the Sarris Candies factory in Canonsburg, which also boasts a charming, old-fashioned ice cream parlor.
