Pack your comfiest shoes, bottled water, and plenty of snacks in your car. Then, set off on a leisurely drive to the small town of Portersville, population of just over 230, in Butler County.
Of course, Portersville's packed with natural beauty, including Moraine State Park, home to Lake Arthur. The park promises plenty to do all year round — from hiking and swimming in the summer to cross country skiing and snowmobiling in the winter.
And, just six miles from Moraine State Park, McConnells Mill State Park sprawls across more than 2,500 acres. Love waterfalls? Then, head out on the half-mile Hells Hollow Trail, an easy trek that will lead you to Hells Hollow Falls.
Just 4.6 miles from McConnells Mill and 3.2 miles from Moraine State Park, Bear Run Campground offers a picture-perfect way to spend a few days and nights among nature.
The sprawling campground features tenting, RV spaces, and cabin rentals for a cozy night's sleep. And, during the day, visit the nearby state parks or go canoeing, kayaking, or horseback riding, starting at the campground.
Or, if you're ready to head home after a day of exploring Portersville, treat yourself to a delicious meal at one of the area restaurants — such as Brown's Country Kitchen — first.
Portersville is also home to the famous Snowman, an ice cream joint that serves ice cream for both humans and pups from — you guessed it — a giant snowman.
