Adventures abound in the Pittsburgh area, wouldn’t you say? If it’s thrills and chills for which we’re looking, we just need to make a beeline for Kennywood or Idlewild Park. But, if we’re on the hunt for an adventurous day at what might fairly be called a natural playground, we only need to set off for Linn Run State Park near Pittsburgh.
Discover pleasant surprises around every corner at Linn Run State Park, in Rector (near Ligonier), about an hour and 10 minutes from downtown Pittsburgh.
Cross a storybook wooden foot bridge that passes over a flowing stream. And, to snap photos of a streaming waterfall, embark on the 2.2-mile Adams Fall Loop Trail.
Of course, the highlight of the trail is its namesake, Adams Falls. Don't expect a gushing waterfall, although the falls are much more powerful after a recent rainfall.
But, the waterfall is just one of many surprises Linn Run State Park holds. Come across the ruins of the McGinnis Rod and Gun Club, once a hunting lodge you can now explore.
And, lace up those hiking shoes for a journey along the .9-mile Beam Rock Trail, that will take you to a spectacular overlook with sweeping views of the park.
Don't forget to pack lunch to enjoy a picnic in the park's picnic area. Other popular activities at the park include hiking, horseback riding, and camping.
