Pittsburgh’s surrounded by enchanting small towns. Towns where restaurants and shops dot main streets. Everyone knows everyone else. And, history whispers from just about every corner of the town. Saltsburg, an historic town near Pittsburgh, makes an idyllic destination for a day trip.
Nestled along the water, the charming town of Saltsburg promises a little bit of everything: A rich history, quaint shops and restaurants, and an abundance of outdoor activities.
Just over 800 people call the historic town, which got its start back in the late 1790s, home. The town earned its moniker from the prominent role it played in the salt industry from its inception until the tail end of the 1800s.
The credit for the discovery of salt in the small town goes to one woman, known simply as Mrs. Deemer. Back in the late 1800s, Mrs. Deemer noticed that once boiling water from a nearby spring evaporated, it left a salt residue. That led to the birth of a new industry.
The water also plays a prominent role in Saltsburg's history. The Conemaugh River and Loyalhanna Creek merge together to create the Kiskiminetas River in the town.
Every June the town celebrates its history with Historic Saltsburg Canal Days. Held at Canal Park, the popular festival features a parade, live entertainment, food and vendor booths, and games.
Pennsylvania Main Line Canal line, a 100 mile waterway that joined Pittsburgh with Johnstown, ran right through Saltsburg for three decades. The railroad replaced the canal as the primary mode of transportation in 1882.
Today, townspeople and visitors flock to Saltsburg for its plethora of outdoor activities. The West Penn Trail runs from Saltsburg to Blairsville. Kayaking, boating, and fishing are popular activities at Loyalhanna Lake (pictured below).
Carve out time during your visit to Saltsburg to tour the Rebecca B. Hadden Stone House Museum (pictured below). The museum pays homage to the town's history, featuring a continuously growing collections of artifacts.

Of course, a visit to Saltsburg wouldn't be complete without a bit of window shopping and a hearty meal. Canal Country Cupboard, picture below, sells a variety of handcrafted items and antiques.
Sit down to a delightful meal at The Olde Salt Restaurant in the Historic District. The charming restaurant features an eclectic menu of such dishes as baked cod, spaghetti and meatballs, and the Olde Salt Burger.
