Pittsburgh’s a pretty great city. We all probably agree about that, or we wouldn’t live here, right? But, like with any city, it’s got some downsides. Those downsides can lead to plenty of frustrating moments every Pittsburgher has experienced at least once (and, more likely, many, many times.) Not surprisingly, many of those frustrating moments have to do with traveling around the area. See if you agree.
Sure, the City of Bridges is absolutely beautiful. But, it can also be downright frustrating. Accidentally crossing the wrong bridge could – and has – caused us drivers countless headaches and added countless hours of driving time to our commutes.
Pittsburgh’s earned plenty of nods – of disapproval - for its frustrating driving experiences. And, that includes its notoriously short on-ramps. Unfortunately, we’ve all had to deal with them, sometimes sitting at the end of the short on-ramp until traffic has cleared.
Specifically the Squirrel Hill Tunnel. How many times have you been cruising down the Parkway East, making great time to your destination? Then, you notice traffic starting to get heavy as you near the Edgewood exit? And, boom! Complete stop. (Maybe even just as frustrating? Coming out of the Squirrel Hill Tunnel to absolutely no traffic.)
You’re making great time – getting to work, a party, or somewhere else. Then, it happens. You run into road construction. Now, you’re not going to be on time. You’ll be late or might not even make it. Ah, road construction – ahem, summer – in the Burgh.
It never fails. You’re going along just swimmingly, avoiding all the potholes, when one just pops up in front of you. And, no matter how quickly you serve, slam! Right into it.
It inevitably happens to all of us. We wake up to a summer-like morning, put on our favorite summer clothes, and head out of the house for the day. By the end of the day, the sky has turned grey and snow is on its way. That’s why we dress in layers and carry extra clothes in our car, right?
Virtual hands up if you rely on the back roads to get where you want to go quickly, while avoiding all that main road traffic? On good days, we can drive merrily along, cutting out drive time. But, on bad day, why-oh-why do we have to get behind a driver that just crawls along, not even hitting the double digits of the speed limit?
We’ve all been there. We’ve either had our parking spot stolen after digging out of the snow and saving it with a chair. Or, we’ve had our turn signal on, ready to turn into a parking space when, from out of nowhere, someone steals it right from us.
10. Going to the grocery store before a big snowstorm.
Sure, we might not be one of those people who heads to the grocery store to stock up on the toilet paper, milk, and bread before a pending snowstorm. But, how many times have you been planning to go grocery shopping (read: you’re out of everything), and it just happens to coincide with the great rush before the storm?
11. The agony of defeat – just when victory was so close.
We’ve all been there. On the edge of our seats, just waiting for the final moments of the game that would lead to the World Series, the Super Bowl, or the Stanley Cup. What’s your most frustrating sports moment? The last minute Pirates’ loss to the Braves in the 1992 NLCS, perhaps?
