Hey, cheese lovers! Who’s up for a deliciously cheesy road trip that will satisfy your every cheese craving? This fun and easy road trip will lead you to some of the best places to find cheese – and cheese dishes – in Pittsburgh and a bit beyond. Stock up on your favorite cheeses from around the world. Discover new cheese shops. And, treat yourself to a scrumptious meal or two starring a delightfully delicious cheese entree.
Our cheesy road trip kicks off at The Cheese House in New Wilmington. Browse the spacious cheese store, an area favorite for more than four decades, that sells more than 100 types of cheese - both imported and domestic. In fact, The Cheese House holds distinction as Western Pennsylvania's largest cheese and specialty food store. After you've stocked up on cheese, check out the rest of the goodies - from jams and jellies to popcorn and beef jerky.
All that looking at cheese got you a bit hungry? Well, then, our next stop is sure to fill you up. The Yard in Shadyside features a delightfully cheesy menu. Bite into one of their famous grilled cheese sandwiches. Choose from such gourmet grilled cheeses as the Fried Green Tomatoes, Simple Jack, and Smack Yo Mama, the latter of which consists of beer cheese, onion straws, cheddar cheese, and BBQ pulled chicken. Of course, you'll find other scrumptious cheesy dishes on the menu, too. Try the Mac Attack's Balls (mac and cheese balls) and a bowl of creamy mac and cheese.
Completely full now? Let's go cheese shopping! Our next stop takes us to Chantal's Cheese Shop where you'll find a generous selection of cheeses - from American to Blue. But, that's just the tip of the cheesy goodness. Chantal's also sells such delicious items as cheese plates, cheese spreads, and gift baskets. Of course, if you're still hungry, sit down for lunch, too.
Let's check out some more cheeses. This time we're heading to the Pennsylvania Macaroni Company, famous for its large selection of artisan cheeses. Stock up on cheeses from around the world, including England, France, Greece, Italy, and Spain. Then, check out the rest of the goodies - deli meats, seafood, and snacks - at this popular shop. And, if Pennsylvania Macaroni Company wins you over, buy a Penn Mac t-shirt, chef's apron, or hat.
Our final stop takes us to Mama Lena's II for - what else? - a delicious pizza pie. In fact, did you know that Mama Lena's makes a pizza that is bigger than the table? That's right. Just order the Monster Pizza, a 30-inch, 64-cut pie of cheesy goodness. Of course, Mama Lena's II also makes other scrumptious cheese dishes, too, including cheese fries, fettuccine Alfredo, and cheese ravioli.
