Less than a half an hour’s drive from downtown Pittsburgh lies a charming town that, in some ways, has been frozen in time. Lush green trees snuggle against the wide sidewalks that welcome both villagers and visitors to enjoy what looks like a main street straight off of an old-fashioned postcard.
Welcome to the village of Sewickley, Pennsylvania. Let’s take a virtual tour of this charming town near Pittsburgh that is perfect for a summer day trip:
Head straight for the main street where you can stroll through the many locally-owned shops before stopping for a snack or a meal at one of the town's many restaurants, such as Andora, 424 Walnut, Lula, or Mambo Italia.
Summertime – well April through November – means the community farmers market on the first Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The farmers market features traditional fruits, vegetables, and meats as well as hometown favorites like pierogies and pasta.
Visit Sewickley on July 29 for the unique evening event – and it's free! – the Sewickley Night Mart, a shopping festival that runs from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Browse the local shops. Indulge in foods from some of Pittsburgh's best food trucks, and enjoy live musical performances.
Activities abound in the quaint village of Sewickley. Treat yourself to a spa day at The Sewickley Spa. Play a round of golf at Sewickley Heights Golf Club. Or, take a walking tour of the town.
Visit Sewickley on a Friday and be sure to make advance reservations for lunch, served from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at the Christy House. Run by a ministry of St. Stephen's Church, the group uses the proceeds from the lunches and from the two on site shops to help women's and children's ministries.
Pay homage to the victims of one of Pittsburgh's most heartbreaking tragedies by visiting the Sewickley Cemetery. The USAir Flight 427 Memorial Monument honors the 132 people who died when the plane crashed in Hopewell Township in 1994.
Sewickley's tight-knit community means a vibrant social scene. Many people visit Sewickley during October for the town's annual Oktoberfest celebration.
The town transforms into a winter wonderland every late November and through December for Yuletide in Sewickley, featuring such events as Small Business Saturday, light up night, free carriage rides, and visits from the jolly fella himself, Santa Claus.
A visit to Sewickley is almost guaranteed to result in another visit and maybe even another visit, especially with all of the events held throughout the year.
The charming town of Sewickley, just outside of Pittsburgh, is but one of the many communities that offer an old-fashioned experience in small town America. After you’ve visited Sewickley, you might just want to add this beautiful little town to your must visit list this summer.
