Pittsburgh's bursting with charming diners, many serving homemade food just like mom and grandma (or dad and grandpa) used to make. The following road trip features some of the Burgh's most popular diners. However, you can mix things up a bit by adding or deleting stops to meet your interests. Ready to hit the road?
Let's make our first delicious destination Gab & Eat in Carnegie. A popular neighborhood diner for more than three decades, Gab & Eat features a generous menu of homemade breakfast and lunch dishes - from pancakes and French toast to hoagies and club sandwiches. Stop by Gab & Eat from Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Saturday from 6 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., and Sunday from 7 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.
Be prepared to wait in long lines at DeLuca's Diner in the Strip District. Yep, the diner is that popular, and the wait is well worth it. Bring cash to this cash only diner that's been a neighborhood staple since 1950. Indulge in such breakfast and lunch dishes as omelettes, the Famous Breakfast Burrito, burger baskets, and sub platters. DeLuca's Diner welcomes guests Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Saturday from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Sunday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Off we go to our next stop: Kelly O's Diner in the Strip District, which opened in 2009. (Kelly O's original location in North Hills opened in 2001.) And, you might have a wait here, too, but don't worry. It's definitely worth it. The charming diner serves both lunch and dinner, featuring such popular menu items as breakfast sandwiches, omelettes, burgers, and club sandwiches. Visit Kelly O's in the Strip Monday through Saturday from 5 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sunday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Now, we're headed to Pamela's Diner in Shadyside. (Of course, you can choose to visit one of its other locations, too, such as Oakland, Squirrel Hill, or Millvale.) Famous for its hotcakes, the popular diner also serves fresh salads, burgers, wraps, and an assortment of sandwiches. Don't forget cash. Visit Pamela's Diner, open in Shadyside from Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Still having fun? Next, we're headed to a Wilkinsburg original. Pull up a chair or slip onto a stool at the counter at Nancy's Diner, which serves breakfast and lunch. A neighborhood staple since 1976, the quaint diner offers classic breakfast and lunch dishes. Or, stop by for a piping hot cup of coffee or hot chocolate, paired with a delicious dessert like homemade sweet potatoes or ice cream sandwiches. Visit Nancy's Diner, open Tuesday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Our next stop leads us to Big Jim's Restaurant, another popular Pittsburgh diner since 1977. Be prepared for a delicious dilemma, too, as you browse the impressive menu that's chock full of appetizers, salads, burgers, hoagies, and pizza. Or, opt a hearty entree, such as New York strip steak, jumbo shrimp, or homemade lasagna. Dig into a delicious meal at Big Jim's, open Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., Friday from 11 a.m. to 12 a.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12 a.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Finally, we come to our last destination of this spectacularly scrumptious road trip. Dor-Stop Restaurant, with the slogan "A Diner Lover's Dream," features a hearty assortment of breakfast and lunch dishes. Opt for a diner classic - the French toast or eggs Benedict, perhaps? Or, if you're sitting down to lunch, consider a hoagie, a burger, or a hot meatloaf sandwich. Dor-Stop welcomes diners Monday through Saturday from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
