Do you ever feel as though you were just always meant to be a Pittsburgher? Even if you weren’t born here, you just feel as though belong here, as if you are meant to be here? Of course, we all have our own reasons for feeling as though Pittsburgh’s just meant to be home. But, there are some telltale signs that we all probably have experienced. Signs that make it pretty clear we were meant to be Pittsburghers. See if you agree with them.
And, thank goodness you do because the majority of your wardrobe just happens to be black and gold. And, that’s a good thing because how many times during the year are we called upon to wear the city’s colors – to root for the Steelers, the Pens, and the Pirates?
2. You call it "pop," always have, and always will.
Just as we learn our ABC’s when we’re little, we learn Pittsburghese from the time we can talk. Perhaps it’s because we spend so much time with other Pittsburghers. Or, maybe it just means we were always meant to be Pittsburghers.
A little cold and snow doesn’t scare most of us, right? Pittsburgh’s winters can drag on and on – and can get pretty repetitive. So, if you see some of us wearing shorts in subzero temperatures with the snow on the ground, don’t fret. Some may say that wearing shorts in the snow is as much a part of our DNA as being Steelers or Pens fans.
But, just because you know the meaning of the Pittsburgh left doesn’t mean you abide by it, right? (And, just in case you’re not from the Burgh, the Pittsburgh left is simply when a vehicle going straight through an intersection allows a vehicle turning left to go first after the light turns green.)
We can live without a lot of things. But, when a snowstorm’s on the horizon, we must have our toilet paper, bread, and milk. That’s why the lines at Giant Eagle, Shop ‘N Save, Aldi, and Target grow longer and longer the closer we inch to the time the snow’s supposed to start falling.
Okay, not everyone rushes to the store at the sign of snow. Some simply shake their heads, wondering what all the fuss is about. What camp do you fall in?
If there’s one thing most of us can probably agree on, it’s we’re really lucky to count Mister Rogers as one of our own. And, we’ve loved and watched him on TV since before we can even remember.
Good thing, too. Pittsburghers are all about fries. We eat fries on our sandwiches and salads. And, what’s the first food stand we go to when we visit Kennywood? You got it. The Potato Patch.
Sure, most of us have been lured away from the Burgh – to bigger cities or smaller towns. But, when it comes right down to it, Pittsburgh is home. And, we really wouldn’t have it any other way.
