Nobody likes having to leave Philadelphia, but sometimes our jobs, education, or family take us away from our home city. When we do travel across the country and spend time away from the City of Brotherly Love, there are a few things we miss about Philadelphia because they are forever in our hearts. Here are just a few things we’ll always hold near and dear.
1. Wawa.
People miss Wawa more than anything else when they leave Philadelphia. No other convenience store even comes close to matching their coffee, food, and snack selection.
2. Honesty.
In the south and midwest, you always hear about how people are so nice. If you spend a little time out there, though, you'll realize it's all fake. Philadelphians are rude, yeah, but at least we're honest.
3. Being able to order a lager.
When you try to order "lager" outside of Philly, you'll just get strange looks.
4. Or a citywide special.
You can order a citywide at pretty much every single bar in Philadelphia, and get a beer and a shot of bourbon for $3-$5. That's something you just don't find in other cities!
5. Artwork that will brighten your day.
Philly has more street art than any other city in the country. When you're used to seeing beautiful murals on so many buildings, everything else just looks so... bland.
6. Edible Cheesesteaks.
The general rule of thumb is if your new local pizza shop claims to make "authentic Philly cheesesteaks," you're gonna have a bad time.
7. Music at City Hall.
Not only is City Hall one of the most stunning buildings you'll ever see, but the courtyard in the middle is the best place to listen to street musicians take advantage of the perfect acoustics. Whenever I spend time away from the city, the music is one thing I really miss about Philadelphia.
8. Philly Jesus.
Whether you love him or hate him, Philly Jesus is a big part of walking around Center City. You won't realize that you kind of miss him until you're telling people in your new city about some of the things you've seen on the Philly streets.
9. Fresh pretzels.
You can find Auntie Anne's and Superpretzels around the country, but nothing tops a fresh, warm Philly soft pretzel.
10. The best hangover food.
Whether you try to prevent your hangover by getting salt and pepper wings at 3 AM in Chinatown, or you head straight for Federal Donuts in the morning, there's no better selection of greasy balanced breakfasts than in Philadelphia.
11. Eagles Tailgate Parties.
There's a reason we've perfected hangover food... and the Eagles are a big part of it. Though we bring our loyalty with us when we travel, there's nothing quite like a real Eagles tailgate party, at the Linc or at a friend's house.
What do you miss most about Philadelphia when you leave? Is it the food? The company? Tell us in the comments!
