Philadelphia is a foodie city, where you can find the best sandwiches in the world, the country’s oldest candy shop, and so many cheesesteaks that you can’t possibly keep track of them all. It’s no surprise, then, that we’ve got the best food markets in America. While Reading Terminal Market in Center City is always a favorite, the slightly lesser known Italian Market on 9th Street in South Philly definitely deserves attention. You’ll find some of the best places in the world hiding at the Italian Market – like Philadelphia’s very own cheese cave.
The Italian Market is South Philly's answer to Reading Terminal, and it's full of incredible, life-changing vendors.
You can find the best tortillas in Philadelphia at Tortilleria San Roman or have a great hoagie at Ludovico's, but perhaps the most famous store is Di Bruno Bros., where you can find hundreds and hundreds of delicious cheeses.
In the 1930s, Danny and Jo Di Bruno arrived in Philadelphia through Ellis Island.
They expected streets paved with gold, but loved the cobblestones in their new city. The Di Bruno brothers opened up Di Bruno Bros. Grocery Store at 930 S. 9th Street in Philly's Italian Market.

For nearly 80 years, Di Bruno Bros. has earned a reputation as the best place in the Italian Market for fresh cheese and meats.
Di Bruno Bros always has more than 300 different types of cheese in stock, from their popular goudas to delicious cheddar, and everything in between. They even call it the "Cheese Cave!"
There's no answer to that question, by the way. With how many you have to choose from, you don't need anyone's parm-isson to spend a whole paycheck on cheese.
Di Bruno Bros. is one of the most popular stands in the Italian Market, and they've since opened other locations in Rittenhouse Square and the Comcast Center.
Thanks to their commitment to quality and new technology that has allowed them to share their delicious, curated foods with the rest of the country, Di Bruno's was recognized as "Gourmet Retailer of the Year" by the Specialty Food Association in 2006. For more information on how to receive Di Bruno Bros. glorious goodies delivered right to your door, check out their website here.
Personally, I could spend a month browsing their selection - it really is that grate.
Di Bruno Bros. rotates their cheese selection seasonally, so you'll be able to try something new each time you visit. The staff is incredibly knowledgable, and they'll be able to help you choose the best cheese pairings for meals you may be planning.

Of course, you can find a great selection of other foods here, too!
Di Bruno Bros. is the perfect place to shake some of your winter blues and pick up a gourmet treat for yourself. Their hours are: Monday: 9:00am - 5:00pm
Tuesday - Thursday: 9:00am - 6:00pm
Friday - Saturday: 8:00am - 6:00pm
Sunday: 8:00am - 4:00pm
Be sure to check out the rest of the Italian Market while you’re there, and you’ll soon understand why the neighborhood of Passyunk is one of the most charming places in Philadelphia. Not only will you find great foods, cheeses, wines, and other edible delights… you can even hang out by the singing fountain, where you’ll hear Sinatra coming from the water all day long!
